David Edward Box - Regency Vanity Case

£2,950

This coromandel, inlaid brass vanity case was made by the renown box maker of the 1800's, David Edwards. The box is veneered in a striking coromandel wood, with inlaid brass edging and inlay. On the top is a crest of the original owners. The interior is lined in leather and is void, with the trays and bottles no longer with the box. The lock looks to have been replaced, but that lock and its original key are working. There is damage to the brass plate with the makers name and address most likely caused by someone trying to open the case when the key had been lost.

On the maker, David Edwards:

David Edwards was the premier box maker in England from the early 1800s -1850s. He first came to notoriety by producing exceptional military campaign writing slopes. He then expanded into vanity cases and sewing boxes. His work was considered of such high quality that he was granted a Royal Warrant by George IV. He was then appointed, ‘Writing and Dressing Case manufacturer to his most gracious Majesty’, King William IV and finally he was granted a Royal Warrant by Queen Victoria.
