Victorian Walnut Inlaid Sewing Box

£1,050

This is an outstanding example of a Victorian workbox. It has an intricately inlaid lid with various motives bordering a central panel with a group of flowers. All 4 sides have a parquetry inlaid design of ebony and heartwood surrounding deeply figured walnut panels.

The interior is lined with a cobalt blue and gold paper which surrounds a picture of a town in the countryside around 1830 on the underside of the lid. There is a lift out tray in the same paper, though exposure to use and the sun have darkened the blue. The centre of the tray has a velvet pin cushion that has a small repair to it, to close a small tear.

The underside is veneered in a burr elm. The box sits on 4 turned walnut feet. Two of these have been replaced. There is a working lock and key.
