Miniature of George Washington c. 1824
£295
An oval overpainted miniature portrait of George Washington, house in a red tortoiseshell Buhle work frame. Drawn from Gilbert Stuart’s “Athenaeum” portrait, this miniature would have been created to send abroad to dignitaries and foreign public figures to create tangibility for the new country and its leaders.
This image of George Washington sits in a brass and tortoiseshell buhle frame, original to the time. The back is sealed with paper in two languages - Latin, Arabic. This is a lovely piece of history that served a purpose to cement the legitimacy of the United States.
